In countries such as Cuba, China and Iran, Internet censorship is enforced and stops users from accessing specific websites such as YouTube and Facebook. Fortunately, anti-censorship software such as Freegate has been developed to allow users access to sites that are blocked.
Technology behind the software relies on a configuration that is similar to a P2P proxy system network. Freegate utilizes Dynaweb and two encrypted tunnels that are secure and safe for browsing the Internet. Users can choose to run in Classic Mode or Proxy Mode. The advantage of using Proxy Mode is that it allows a user to access a blocked website with ease by typing the desired destination into the address bar. Proxy settings automatically change so that websites display properly.
An advantage of Freegate is that it does not require users to install it on their devices. Setup is fast and intuitive.
Four tabs on the software interface give information to users regarding their connection. These items are data for the Tunnel, Status, Server and Settings. The Tunnel tab allows users to choose Proxy Mode or Classic Mode and specify the tunnel that they want to use. The Status tab indicates which tunnel is currently being used, and the Server tab notifies the user which server is being utilized. By clicking on the Settings tab, users can delete their browsing history and change other program settings.
There's a slight learning curve for individuals that have never used proxy software, but once a person uses the software a few times, he or she should be able to connect to most blocked websites fairly fast.
